Carl Gustav Jung saw alchemy not as an archaic superstition but as a symbolic language describing the process of psychological individuation - the transformation of the unconscious into integrated wholeness.

He believed that the old alchemists were, without realizing it, projecting the operations of their own psyche onto matter.

So when they described calcination, dissolution, or coagulation, they were intuitively depicting the same interior processes that modern depth psychology explores.
